honestly i usually have 8-12 lives by the time im on the last level and i get them with the slot machine. i think the trick to winning lives in these is just having as much coins as you can get. so especially during the earlier easy levels in stead of putting the potion door near where i know the mushroom is i put it near a bunch of radishes so i pull up more coins going into the door. also i would suggest not using warps it means less chances to get lives. hope that helps. super mario bros ...
